Six are bound for sacrifice, appeasing gods with ritual vice
as drummers beat this gravid air in painted masks with skin laid bare
the chanters spin their woeful yarns while dancers weave beneath the stars
and shadows lurch before the fire to sate voracious spirits’ ire.
Call upon our heaven’s might to invoke ephemeral rites
obscured in smoke and ember glow, our legends built on lies of old.
Cascading feet abuse the ground as throbbing throats intone aloud
in cries so shrill they wake the night; our wails stave off their godly spite.
Knives flash crimson drawing red while uttered words excite the dead
who add their chorus to this spell imbuing us with a power so fell
our eyes turn green and open mouthed we end this heathen cycle now,
with arms aloft we cease to spin; the six have breathed their final in.

Begging with our final breath
rationing the little left.
Toiling onward without rest
harvest yielding less and less.
Hungry mouths held open wide
hoping for a taste of life.
Sitting listless side-by-side
seeing all through sightless eyes.
Pleading with a price too low
a cost that no-one else can know.
Bartering with heart and soul
offering our empty homes.
Charity arrives too late
we have all been dead for days.
No more hungry mouths to sate
heaped in mass communal graves.

Epigrams of interest
waking animosity –
visceral their hatred
plebeian proclivity.
Gross incomprehension,
bellicose identity,
fear and envy mingle;
the mob becomes an entity.
Purpose is the fuel
to the fire of stupidity.
Ignorance the zeal
that initiates calamity.
Learners of the true world
become the public enemy
as leaders who would rule, now
denounce all past formality.
“Intelligence is sinful
threatening humanity,
pedagogical and chiding
a cleanse is the priority.”
Legislate to hinder all
the great minds of the century,
following their one path
with blind and fervent loyalty.
Introducing regimes,
quashing productivity,
spurning those with reason
in favour of brutality.
Instigating violence,
promoting their supremacy –
Myopia the sickness
emboldening their verity.
And so begins the marching
in khaki uniformity,
sacking private domiciles,
assuming grand impunity.
Burning down the libraries,
razing universities,
purging all the learned
with maniacal depravity.
Creation of their system,
borne of shunned integrity,
rife with politicians
whipping up majorities.
Promises so baseless
but backed with false sincerity –
Where once the world sought progress
charisma’s now the currency.
Toothsome smiles aplenty
secure wins with vulgarity,
righteousness a slogan
while democracy a mockery.
Positions gained with lies
lead to fools dictating policy
but honesty is paltry
“as long as there is victory.”
Utopia is realised,
rewarding their fidelity
with vacant culminations
and emptied, broken guarantees.
Yet none proclaim them guilty,
escaping culpability,
as wisdom died in governance
deposed by amorality.
